“Used,” Bolt said. “She concentrated on school and her career and kept busy. Just never went looking for anything ever again. I was surprised as hell when you called last night and said she’d picked you up at the Cactus Corral. But I thought it was a step in the right direction,” he added with a grin.

Cash crossed his arms over his chest and stared thoughtfully at the powder-blue Pontiac. He assumed the guy they were talking about was Jan, the same guy whose name was tattooed on Mindy’s rear. It was hard to believe he was simply a class one prick, though there were certainly plenty of them around. But if he had been a total jerk, it seemed as though Mindy should have gotten wind of it. She’d gone out with him for a month.

Still. What an experience for a woman—a young woman—her first time.

“Can I borrow one of your cars?” Cash asked, a plan forming in his mind as he spoke. He wanted to do something nice for Mindy. He wanted her to know that he considered her much more than just a one-night stand.

Bolt walked over to the workbench and lifted a ring of keys from a hook. “Take the blue Dodge,” he said as he tossed the keys to Cash.

“Cash?” Mindy called cheerfully, digging the coffee container from the paper grocery bag on the kitchen table. She pried off the lid and broke the seal, the wonderful dark, earthy smell of coffee filling the cheerfully lit room. As she scooped the fragrant blend into the white filter then closed it inside the stainless steel coffeemaker, she hummed a popular country song that had been playing on the radio during her drive home from the store.

She had woken up sore all over, aching in places she hadn’t known she had places.

But it was a good kind of ache. She felt as though she’d been thoroughly used and completely possessed. She felt wanted and desired. And the fact that Cash was still there when she woke, sprawled across her sex-wrecked bed, naked and hard and sexy as hell, hadn’t hurt one bit.

Of course, she’d sobered up a little when she’d realized he didn’t have a ride home and that might be the only reason he was still there. Then she’d concluded that even that might not last if she didn’t have some coffee to offer him when he woke up. She hadn’t been lying last night when she’d said she didn’t have any. She grabbed a quick shower, dressed quickly and, after tripping over Cash’s wallet on her way down the hall, she’d left it on the table just inside the door before heading out to the closest store.

“Cash,” she called again as she filled the glass pot with water and poured it through the top of the coffeemaker. “I can’t believe you’re still asleep,” she sang out as she wiped her hands on a small linen towel then headed back through the house to the bedroom.
